Reggie Bush is forfeiting the Heisman Trophy he won in 2005. The former USC and current New Orleans Saints running back said he is giving up the honor in order to keep speculation from hurting the dignity of the award. USC was punished by the NCAA earlier this year after findings that Bush and his family took money and improper gifts from sports promoters and agents during his time at the school. In giving up the award, Bush added he would strive to demonstrate he is still worthy of the confidence bestowed on him by the Heisman Trophy Trust. The Trust has reportedly been considering whether to strip Bush of the award. It’s the first time in history that a Heisman Trophy has been vacated. Earlier this year, USC gave back its copy of the Heisman and struck all references to Bush’s award from its displays and records. The school also had to vacate all wins from December 2004 through the 2005 season, and are ineligible for postseason games this year and next.
